Admittedly, sticking a camera through a tear in time isn’t the best idea, to go unnoticed by previous generations. It could cause quite a few issues if someone were to see something like this happen. Zillah held a meeting in a nearby conference room with all the crew.

“First of all, I want to say congratulations to Ravyn for being hired full-time,” Zillah said as everyone clapped.

“With that said, we need to continue pushing the boundaries of the timelines and what the Quarksandrium can do. We need an alternate way of surveilling the past that allows us to somewhat control our detection. Does anyone have any suggestions?” Zillah asked.

“What about rovers or an all-terrain vehicle?” Ravyn asked.

“I don’t think that would be good. What if the portal has another error and the opening isn’t where it’s expected to be? The rover would fall to Earth and be destroyed, but we’d be leaving our technology in the past. That wouldn’t be good at all,” Jorge said.

“Valid point,” Ravyn agreed.

“How about a fly or bug that is equipped with cameras? Don’t you have a friend that works with those, Zillah?” Garret asked.

“Well, that won’t work. What if it needs to cross a considerable distance? The smaller the robot, the longer it would take to get to where it needed to be, and it may run out of power,” Ravyn said with a snarky tone, since her idea was shot down.

“We can’t have a huge monster aircraft; that would be noticed too quickly. We could do period-correct aircraft, but then again, it wouldn’t be cost-effective to create an aircraft for every time we want to go back in time,” Jorge said, shooting down his own idea.

“In researching events throughout the past, we’ve encountered many stories of UFOs. How about we use some of those designs to create a drone?” Zillah suggested.

“I guess that’s why you’re the boss. You have all the ideas,” Garret quickly said.

Drones did seem like the logical answer to the dilemma. They decided that a crewless aircraft would be the least invasive but provide the agility they needed. It would also be easier to maneuver out of sight, and they could dispose of them in areas that were thought to be undiscovered. Many of the first drones were programmed to be scuttled in the depths of the ocean to avoid being discovered. Sometimes it wasn’t easy to recover the crafts they sent back, but the information they received from looking at historic articles would be the critical information they needed to continue.

Early drones were not huge; they were about three feet in diameter. They were much smaller drones than the ones which would succeed them. Since they were also limited by the ground they could cover, operating in the night hours was critical. Should the portal’s arrival time be off, light sensors on the drone would assess the sun’s position to determine if it needed to wait or terminate the mission. A few drones required self-destruction sequences to be made over nearby bodies of water.
